Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 9 – Day 51 – 2/5/2022

today was a day of peace action with rallies around the world to demand an end to the drumbeat of war with Russia over Ukraine and to hold teach-ins around the country to resist the normalization of war and demand that not a single bullet or gun be sent to Ukraine and no new troops or arms to Eastern Europe – we must use diplomacy and negotiation and stop the drumbeat of war…. in this moment of eternity, let us surrender and soften into the embrace of the sheltering arms of the cosmic ree of life breathing into our bellies, sacred space of wisdom and stillpoint of peace, on the seventh day of celebrating a season of peace…

“Peace to all beings
Whether near or far
Known or unknown
Real or imaginary
Visible or invisible
Born or yet to be born.
May all beings
Be well and happy
And free from fear.

Peace to all beings
Within and beyond the imagination
In the world of ideas
In the world of memories
And in the world of dreams.
May all beings
Be well and happy
And free from fear.

Peace in all elements
Of earth, air, fire and water
Fulfilled in space
Peace.

Peace in all universes
From the smallest cells in our bodies
To the greatest galaxies in space
Peace
And light rising

Peace to all beings
Within each being here
To those beings that have been in the past
And to those beings that are yet to be in the future
May all beings
Within each being here
Be well and happy
And free from fear.”

(Buddhist Prayer)

on this day of peace, re-membering the quintessential peace pilgrims, thanks be for our tuning into the timeless frequency of being peace in this moment, in every moment of eternity…

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 9 – Day 50 – 2/4/2022

welcome to day 6 of a season of peace… come sit with me here in the field out beyond taking in the beauty of this moment of eternity…

it is said it only takes 144,000 sentient beings to hear the call and turn toward el canto hondo, the deep soul song, the dream of the earth to establish a re-newed paradigm of reality singing in the frequency of harmony throughout the ocean of being…

how i love meeting you in this field of what we deeply value, this sacred space of interconnectedness…

here, we witness and celebrate this collective hearing and following the call to come back home to spirit, to dissolve into spirit, to be so at one with spirit that all borders vanish… we are present as love, the animating energy of all that is, the saving grace that simply opens the door to love… trusting that in this surrendering, this softening, this turning toward pachamama, the unifying spirit breathing all our relatives alive, we are transported to the stillpoint, the place of creation where the dance of the new begins…

in this moment of eternity as we return home to spirit and dissolve into be so at one that all borders vanish between me and thee, we come in gratitude offering our pains and suffering to be used as compost to nourish the earth… we come as love, the animating energy of all that is and knock on the door asking this door to open to love, simply open… in this trusting, this surrendering, this turning we are transported to the stillpoint where the dance begins, yes, we’re coming back…

~

“…help me to live this day quietly, peacefully. To lean upon Thy great strength trustfully, restfully. To wait for the unfolding of Thy will patiently, serenely. To meet others peacefully, joyously…”

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 9 – Day 49 – 2/3/2022

what a day of re-membering how true these words are… what a miracle to meet each moment fully, how this moment opens us to a new world populated with the  dreams great mystery sings through us, these precious dreams we receive mindfully when we are open and present to deeply listening… i’m still feeling the rhythm of a new beginning and attending to what dreams are quietly forming in the river below the river… so, i turn to the celtic bard of blessing , John O’Donahue, and his poem for mothers-to-be which i see broadly as all mothers of invention, all dreamers of dreams…

“Nothing could have prepared your heart to open like this.

From beyond the skies and the stars
This echo arrived inside of you and started to pulse with life
Each beat a tiny act of growth,
Traversing all our ancient shapes,
On its way home to itself.

Once it began, you were no longer your own.
A new, more courageous you, offering itself
In a new way to a presence you can sense
But you have not seen or known.

It has made you feel alone
In a way you never knew before;

Everyone else sees only from the outside
What you feel and feed with every fiber of your being.

Never have you traveled farther inward
Where words and thoughts become half-light
unable to reach the fund of brightness
Strengthening inside the night of your womb.

Like some primeval moon,
Your soul brightens
The tides of essence
That flow to your child.

You know your life has changed forever,
For in all the days and years to come,
Distance will never be able to cut you off
From the one you now carry
For nine months under your heart.

May you be blessed with quiet confidence
That destiny will guide you and mind you.

May the emerging spirit of your child
Imbibe encouragement and joy
From the continuous music of your heart,
So that it can grow with ease,
Respectant of wonder and welcome when its form is fully filled

And it makes it journey out
To see you and settle at last
Relieved and glad in your arms.

thanks be for our dreams being birthed and coming alive as we celebrate today sixteen months with chasing the rainbow…

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 9 – Day 48 – 2/2/2022

on this powerful portal moment of eternity – 2.2.22 at 2:22 – when we celebrate pachamama for the fertle and abundant gifts she offers in a stady stream and while lunar new year is still being celebrated, what an auspicious moment to feature Thay’s parallel verses (pictured above) which he would write as a theme for the new year… how i love this theme as harmony and peace are two of my favorite words, ways of being with harmony at home connoting being at home in oneself and peace being in harmony throughout our interbeing… below is posted excerpts from a letter written to Thay on the eve of Tet….

“In this sacred moment on the eve of the Lunar New Year of the Tiger, 2022, coming home to our mindful breathing, we are aware that you are here with us.

You have brought us to life and have nurtured us on this beautiful planet. Although we may still be unskillful, still cause harm to ourselves and mother Earth, nevertheless we are beginning to see a path of practice to transform. We are aware that love, understanding and the deep aspiration to go together as a river enables us to enrich our lives and protect our beautiful planet.

Dear Respected Thay, you are a beautiful continuation of spiritual and blood ancestors across the ages, like a lotus in a sea of humanity. In your whole life of practice you have made an infinite contribution towards peace in ourselves and peace in the world. You encourage us to come home to ourselves, to be present for one another, to be as one body, to breathe as one body, and to go together as a river. You bridge differences and fill chasms, and always find the most beautiful gems in each culture and in each faith in order to enrich our path of practice, and inspire in us a direction and a course of action to take so that we can contribute to humanity’s collective wisdom, so that Buddha Maitreya—the Buddha of Love—can manifest each day in the form of a sangha.

Dear Thay, as we end the year, and as your physical body may play hide and seek, we give ourselves permission to grieve, to cry and to remember you. At the same time we come home to the present moment, looking deeply to recognize you in each brother and each sister, each flower bud and new leaf, in each passing cloud and beautiful walking path—in the many wonders of life. Some of us have been your life-long students, some have been to retreats, some have read your books, and some may have never met you but have spent moments enjoying a cup of tea in silence or admiring nature’s beauty with clear eyes—in one way or another, we know you, Thay, and we can recognize you in our very own practice.

Look again, you will see me in you and in every leaf and flower bud
If you call my name, you will see me right away

This is how we, both Teacher and student, can enter the country of the present moment. We will breath together mindfully, walk together mindfully so that we can see that Thay is with us in every moment of our daily life. We all have the shared pain of missing Thay. At the same time, we all trust that we will meet Thay in the many different manifestations of life. , and not only in our own hearts of compassion and hands of action, but also in the hearts of compassion and hands of action of people all over the world. And we know that in this moment, we are meeting the spring with Thầy.

Dear Thay, dear Mother Earth, dear ancestors, on the eve of the Lunar New Year, we promise that in the Year of the Tiger, 2022, we will practice to bring harmony and joy into our homes and our sanghas, and to be like bees in a beehive, or cells in one body. We promise to cultivate openness, to practice deep listening and compassionate speech so that we can communicate easily with members of our family, sangha or workplace. We promise to cultivate the insight of interbeing so that there is harmony in the home and peace all around. We promise to see the sangha’s happiness as our own happiness. Living the insight of interbeing, we can ensure a brighter future for our descendants here on Earth.

We promise to practice for you—our spiritual and blood ancestors—and for our descendants, so that joy, peace and love can be possible again on earth. Please protect us and be our witness as we make these aspirations.”

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 9 – Day 47 – 2/1/2022

what a confluence of riches today…  the first day of the moon of fledging february and it’s imbolc, the first day of the new year of the ancient earth rhythms calendar and it’s the first day of chinese new year celebrations and the first day of black history month and the third day of a season of peace… still in the energy of the potent new moon on this day of imbolc, in the belly, it’s a beautiful moment of eternity to plant new seeds and to check on those already planted… let us honor our new beginning with our soul’s intention for deepening and expansion… in our new life, we commit our energy to… peace, love and joy thanking beloved for carrying us across the wild deep blue sea of clouds that never die to a shore we cannot see, trusting beloved to transport us into the true refuge of great mystery…

in this moment of new beginning, as we see and bee a just world of love and peace, let us close this ceremony with a favorite poem, this one penned by the poet/painter who only wanted to paint sunlight on the walls of life, Lawrence Ferlinghetti…

~

Instructions to Painters and Poets

“I asked a hundred painters and a hundred poets
how to paint sunlight
on the face of life
Their answers were ambiguous and ingenious
as if they were all guarding trade secrets
Whereas it seems to me
all you have to do
is conceive of the whole world
and all humanity
as a kind of art work
a site-specific art work
an art project of the god of light
the whole earth and all that’s in it
to be painted with light

And the first thing you have to do
is paint out postmodern painting
And the next thing is to paint yourself
in your true colors
in primary colors
as you see them
(without whitewash)
paint yourself as you see yourself
without make-up
without masks

Then paint your favorite people and animals
with your brush loaded with light
And be sure you get the perspective right
and don’t fake it
because one false line leads to another

And then paint the high hills
when the sun first strikes them
on an autumn morning
With your palette knife
lay it on
the cadmium yellow leaves
the ochre leaves
the vermillion leaves
of a New England autumn
And paint the ghost light of summer nights
and the light of the midnight sun
which is moon light

And don’t paint out the shadows made by light
for without chiaroscuro you’ll have shallow pictures
So paint all the dark corners too
everywhere in the world
all the hidden places and minds and hearts
which light never reaches
all the caves of ignorance and fear
the pits of despair
the sloughs of despond
and write plain upon them
“Abandon all despair, ye who enter here”

And don’t forget to paint
all those who lived their lives
as bearers of light
Paint their eyes
and the eyes of every animal
and the eyes of beautiful women
known best for the perfection of their breasts
and the eyes of men and women
known only for the light of their minds
Paint the light in their eyes
the light of sunlit laughter
the song of eyes
the song of birds in flight

And remember that the light is within
if it is anywhere
and you must paint from the inside
Start with purity
with pure white
the pure white of gesso
the pure white of cadmium white
the pure white of flake white
the pure virgin canvas
the pure life we all begin with

Turner painted sunlight
with egg tempera
(which proved unstable)
and Van Gogh did it with madness
and the blood of his ear
(also unstable)
and the Impressionists did it
by never using black
and the Abstract Expressionists did it
with white house paint

But you can do it with the pure pigment
(if you can figure out the formula)
of your own true light
But before you strike the first blow
on the virgin canvas
remember its fragility
and remember its innocence
its original innocence
before you strike the first blow

Or perhaps never strike it
And let the light come through
the inner light of the canvas
the inner light of the models posed
in the life study the inner light of everyone
Let it all come through
like a pentimento
the light that’s been painted over
the life that’s been painted over
so many times
Let it all surge to the surface
the painted-over image
of primal life on earth

And when you’ve finished your painting
stand back astonished
stand back and observe
the life on earth that you’ve created
the lighted life on earth
that you’ve created
a new brave world”

my soul honors your soul/our soul… i honor the place in you/in us where the infinite resides. i honor the light, love, truth, beauty, joy and peace within you/within us…

namaste, beloveds…

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 9 – Day 46 – 1/31/2022

Happy New Moon and Lunar Imbolc!

this new moon of oracles and omens emphasizes social and collective concerns which we are seeing abundantly in the outer world with the energy of the divine feminine and democracy rising spontaneously and organically across the planet… an excellent time to plant seeds of energy for a world that works for all and to water these seeds in under this dark moon nourishing the tap root connected to our one heart re-membering that even though we can’t see the blooms or even the sprouts yet, our collective cultivation of justice is taking root riotously while we do our work daily of being peace withe every step and waging justice for all… closing out the dreaming moonth and coming at such a powerful moment of eternity, this moon calls us to be free within which is where everything takes root… this moon enrgizes fresh starts and fledging – yes, winging our way into the land of impossible dreams coming into reality…

thanks be for our collectively pouring love abundantly into our dream seeds creating an even more activated field of peace and harmony…

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 9 – Day 45 – 1/30/2022

“Place yourself in the middle of the stream of power and wisdom which flows into your life. Then, without effort, you are impelled to truth and to perfect contentment.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson ~

To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something, If we remember those times and places — and there are so many — where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however a small way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.

~ Howard Zinn ~

in concert with the season for nonviolence which begins today on the anniversary of Gandhi’s assassination and ends 64 days later on April 4th, the anniversary of King’s assassination, today, the pilgrimage begins my favorite season that’s always in season – a season of peace…

on this first day, we begin with a contemplation and practice of courage, of heart which is a LOVEly way to begin for goodness knows the way of the peacemaker takes great courage, great heart in a world of dominance consciousness… let us now light the inner flame of our one heart and invoke the beloved peace prayer of St Francis to begin this saunter – this walk on holy ground for this season of peace…

“….. make me an instrument of thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is discord, union;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.”

may we all begin and end each day with a prayer for peace and invoke it through our ultradian healing rhythms that ask us to pause every 90 minutes or so throughout our awake time to sustain optimal functioning…  when saying hello and goodbye to beings, may we say “May Peace Prevail on Earth…”  may we create space in our lives dedicated to praying for, meditating, singing, dancing, contemplating  and being peace… in this way, we create a cosmos of beauty and harmony built on justice, on balance and guided by love…

thanks be for helping me to live this day quietly, peacefully… to lean upon cosmic great strength trustfully, restfully… to wait for the unfolding of the implicate order patiently, serenely… to meet others peacefully, joyously… to walk all ways with wonder and wisdom…

~

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 9 – Day 44 – 1/29/2022

for the past two days, there are shepherds lighting the path i’ve wanted to commemorate in addition to what was honored and so today in this moment of eternity, i re-member a profound moment on january 27, 77 years ago when the Soviet Red Army liberated the Jewish concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenbau, in Poland… as the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, this post is dedicated to all who liberate and to all of us who are liberated… yesterday marked eight years ago that Pete Seeger, the father of  folk music and a shepherd extraordinaire still calling us to embody our better angels by singing love, died and that the crew of Challenger died 36 years ago on the 28th day of this moonth…

“It really boils down to this, all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
~Martin Luther King, Jr.~

with every breath and step on the pilgrimage, i contemplate how we all best serve the whole… i believe the bedrock of this query is understanding that all our relations prosper only when we real-eyes we are part of a greater whole and our survival, our sustainability is intricately linked in the same way we are intricately interconnected to every thread in the web of life… it is, always has been and always will be a story of cooperation… just as all the 70 trillion cells of my body cooperate to make me work, so must the 70 trillion cells to the 70th trillion power cooperate for the cosmos to expand and deepen harmoniously…

yes, Martin saw that the will to connect is our most essential impulse and how what affects one of us, affects everyone of us and how could it not since we are one body-mind-spirit-soul made up of trillions of cells to the infinite power…

since every thought, word and deed affects all our relations, may we all walk in wonder, saunter in awe  as shepherds, as lightkeepers, as sheltering arms, as beloveds all walking each other home to the frequency of right thought, right speech and right action…

i’ll close with the words of Wendell Berry, another pilgrim on a journey and  wisdom lover…

Belong to your place by knowledge of the others who are
your neighbors in it: the old man, sick and poor,
who comes like a heron to fish in the creek,
and the fish in the creek, and the heron who manlike
fishes for the fish in the creek, and the birds who sing
in the trees in the silence of the fisherman
and the heron, and the trees that keep the land
they stand upon as we too must keep it, or die.

This knowledge cannot be taken from you by power
or by wealth. It will stop your ears to the powerful
when they ask for your faith, and to the wealthy
when they ask for your land and your work.
Answer with knowledge of the others who are here
and how to be here with them. By this knowledge
make the sense you need to make. By it stand
in the dignity of good sense, whatever may follow.

Speak to your fellow humans as your place
has taught you to speak, as it has spoken to you.
Speak its dialect as your old compatriots spoke it
before they had heard a radio. Speak
publicly what cannot be taught or learned in public.

Listen privately, silently to the voices that rise up
from the pages of books and from your own heart.
Be still and listen to the voices that belong
to the streambanks and the trees and the open fields.
There are songs and sayings that belong to this place,
by which it speaks for itself and no other.

Find your hope, then, on the ground under your feet.
Your hope of Heaven, let it rest on the ground
underfoot. Be it lighted by the light that falls
freely upon it after the darkness of the nights
and the darkness of our ignorance and madness.
Let it be lighted also by the light that is within you,
which is the light of imagination. By it you see
the likeness of people in other places to yourself
in your place. It lights invariably the need for care
toward other people, other creatures, in other places
as you would ask them for care toward your place and you.

No place at last is better than the world. The world
is no better than its places. Its places at last
are no better than their people…”

may we wander in wonder as shepherds singing light in the dark illuminating the path to our one cosmic heart…

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 9 – Day 43 – 1/28/2022

today as i witness the funeral procession and cremation of one of our foremost apostles and prophets of peace and the world, in this moment of eternity celebrating the astonishing light of his being, of ours, of life continuation, i re-member the words of the Dalai Lama about our island home desperately needing more peacemakers, healers, restorers, lovers and storytellers which reminds me of an old legend of the first peoples of this land…

passed down orally from generation to generation, it is a legend about a savior named deganawida, the peacemaker, originating over a thousand years ago during the final decades of pre-columbian america at a time like now, a time of pervasive fear and instability in the haudenosaunee world when a young virgin gave birth to a son… she was told in a dream that “your child will be a messenger of the creator and will bring peace and harmony to the people on earth.”

when deganawida came of age he told his mother, “I shall now build my canoe from white stone, for the time has come for me to start my mission in this world. I know I must travel afar on lakes and rivers to seek out the council smoke of nations beyond this lake. It is now time for me to go stop the shedding of blood among human beings.”

as deganawida began his mission, he first encountered a group of hunters who were fleeing from the bloodshed in the their own village and he instructed them: “Go back to your people and tell them that the Good News of Peace and Righteousness has come to your nation.”

the peacemaker’s mission, as the many accounts of the legend make clear, was to reestablish the natural equilibrium on which the well being of individuals, societies, and the whole of creation depends… deganawida achieved this mission by healing them—by “making their minds straight.” deganawida’s role was not that of a warrior, but a redemptive shaman—a healer… he was quite explicit about the mission: “health means peace, for that is what comes when minds are sane and bodies are cared for.”

the peacemaker, like the rainmaker, like all healers and medicine elders well knows that conflict is born of suffering and the root causes must be addressed for the village to come back into health and equilibrium where all feel they belong and are cared for and are treated with dignity… may we all breathe deeply together into the sacred space of wisdom and courageously take on the transformative mission of being peacemakers every moment of eternity…
